How to test a fax number before you rely on it

There's no universal "is this fax number alive" lookup tool — fax numbers aren't published in a way that supports that. What actually works is cheaper and more reliable: either listen for the tone yourself, or send a real one-page test and see what comes back.

Method 1: Dial it and listen

Call the number from an ordinary phone. A fax machine that's on and connected answers with a distinct rising tone (the CNG or CED tone, depending on which side answers first) instead of a voice greeting or ringing forever. If you hear that tone, the line is live and fax-capable right now. If you get a voice, a busy signal, or nothing, the number either isn't a fax line anymore or the machine is off.

This confirms the line answers as a fax — it doesn't confirm the machine has paper, isn't jammed, or is actually being checked by anyone.

Method 2: Send a real one-page test fax

This is the only method that confirms the whole path end-to-end — line, machine, and paper output. Send one short page (even just a note: "Test — please disregard") and check what comes back.

1. Send it through any online fax service, or from a machine you have access to.
2. A trustworthy service reports the actual outcome — delivered, busy, no answer, or the far end hanging up mid-page — rather than a bare "sent."
3. If it reports delivered, that's a real MCF (Message Confirmation) acknowledgment from the receiving machine — the protocol's own signal that every page arrived intact, not something the sending side can fake.
